Threading the needle, dodging the bullet, by the skin of your teeth, avoiding disaster, near miss, holy smokes...All those idiomatic sayings seem to be appropriate at a time like this when you live in South Florida.
I could not find a reference source for synonyms of idioms but maybe you can suggest some for me.

Glad to know that you took out flood insurance. If Florida gets submerged and the aligators take over you can always migrate north to the land of your ancestors where you are safe from flooding if you avoid rivers and streams. Will be watching these storms with special interest.
