Proud Parent Moment

We are so proud of Courtney for her outstanding achievement in her ASL class. As a second year student she was selected as the outstanding student of the third year class. Earlier this year she won three gold medals in a district ASL competition (as she had in the previous year).

Being a parent can be inconvenient and sometimes difficult work, but it is also very rewarding. I felt very rewarded last night when I watched our sweet Courtney receive recognition for her special talent.

Shhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Courtney spent part of the weekend at the University of Southern Florida in Tampa with her ASL teacher (Ms. Collins, pictured left) and several other students.  They spent their time at different activities marked by non-verbal communications only.  It was hard to not vocalize for two days, Courtney says.

It is good to have her back home.

Courtney Has Beauty, Brains, and Also Generosity

Courtney recently won three medals. The two Gold and one Silver medals are not only a tribute to her superb talent in American Sign Language (ASL), they are also a testimony to her big-heartedness. When the medals were handed out it was discovered that a mistake had been made. There was one too few Gold medals and one extra Silver medal. Courtney sacrificed and took the Silver medal so that another could have a Gold.

Courtney was awarded Gold medals for finger spelling, for a memorized poem, and for impromptu signing.

Let's all raise our hands and rotate-wave them back and forth in the air (that's the way to applaud for deaf people).
