Flush, Stitch, and Eat

On Saturday I repaired the toilet handle. How annoying when a $4 plastic part breaks. I replaced it with a fancy $14 shiny chrome four-spoked handle which makes flushing so much fun that I now eagerly anticipate trips to the bathroom...

Audrey's sewing machine has been out of service for many months, since the needle clamp fell off while Courtney was using it. Turns out that the clamp needs a "gib" (kind of a cotter pin) to keep it in place on the main drive shaft while in use. But where to get the right "gib"? So that project got put on the shelf until Saturday when I was determined to get it done. After much fruitless searching for the right part I came up with a clever fix by using a portion of a staple-gun's brad as the "gib." Weirdly it worked just fine and the machine is back in business.

To round out the repairs I fixed the dining table. Months ago we had been playing spoons when Walker's friend Joe (big Joe, the Hulk, etc) performed a diving reach for the last remaining spoon. The table first bore the weight well, then objected, and then gave in. We had many good laughs at Joe's expense over that (and we won't be done teasing him for years, I'm sure). It turned out to be a fairly simple matter of removing eight screws and a little bit of glue and small nails and then moving the whole sliding mechanism over just an inch and reattaching it. As good as new, once again.

Hey, if you want to see some interesting pictures click here to see what Jenn and Walker's apartment looks like. She has also written some interesting news about their New Haven life.
