Gators, sunburn, bicycles, swimming pools, games, Bourne Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum, pizza, snacks, good-natured-teasing, family unity, pretty fish, the big-big van, books ... those are what come to mind when I remember the visit of a high school best friend (Chris) and his wonderful family (wife Kristen and children Emily, Daniel, Rebecca, Victoria, Caleb, and Greta).Ft Lauderdale Beach, John U Lloyd Beach State Park, Shark Valley in Everglades National Park, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Sanibel Island, Jacaranda Pizza, the big comfy couch, and Regal Theater -- we tried to give the Fuhs family from Omaha a Florida experience that they would not easily forget.
Belle and Greta should be congratulated for riding their bikes 10 miles in the heat of the August Florida sun. Rebecca is to be awed for her ability to get a cell-phone signal on the outlying beaches of Sanibel Island. Chris was amazing in his ability to read books through most any and every situation imaginable. Victoria was incredible in her steadfastness as she did homework rather than watch the Bourne marathon. Caleb was the youngest to complete the 15 mile bike ride through the gator-infested oven we call Shark Valley. Daniel wore his initials proudly on his chest (the result of a sun-screen application prank from the very first day on the beach). Kristen was the glue that bonded the family together and the benevolent driving force toward action on almost every front (what would families do without mothers?). Emily and Daniel win the contest for the best fish-tale, boasting a shark-sighting while snorkeling.
Our great thanks to the Fuhs family for coming to Florida and letting us share their vacation with them.
We thank our other good friends, the Penrods, for their generous hospitality. It certainly helped to make this experience even more fun.
