Again, my computer just turned off early on me after I had written you all a really long letter. I had to go buy some more time, and I am really pretty furious at this place!!!
*Deep Breaths*
Anyway, it sounds like you are having an exciting time in the disaster-strewn hurricane zone over there. I pray that you may continue safe and strong. I still remember Hurricane Andrew and all that aftermath, and I hope that it was not that bad for the people in Broward, though it sounds like maybe, as far as our immediate area is concerned, there was more damage with Wilma than with Andrew.
As for me, I am doing super well!! We have had some troubles meeting with people this week because they have all seemed just to be really busy, but otherwise things are going well. Tonight we will start a non-smoking program with Daniel, the man who is preparing for baptism. It is a really fun program, and I can't wait to see how it will work. I am sure that he will succeed, as he has a real desire to change his life for the better.
Of late, I have really found myself being able to speak quite fluently, which is a lot of fun. I have even had some people ask me if I am Romanian (before we get into a really in-depth conversation, albeit, but still fun). Last night we were at a member's house and the wife asked me if I could say the prayer because she thought that I had a pleasant way of speaking the language. That was really encouraging to hear after hearing so many times how poorly I speak.
As for winter clothes, a large Walmart-like department store just opened up here in Romania, and we are going up there today to finally buy some clothes for me. Elder Peet, to this point, has been lending me most of his winter stuff, though I have bought a sweater-vest and some gloves. As for my shoes, I was wearing the Italian-made shoes of Br. Richards, but last week the heel actually broke off of one of them. I think we will go to a repair store sometime this week to see how much it would cost to repair them.
Elder Peet has proven to be a really fun companion, indeed. His father is in the Air Force, so he has moved around a lot, and, like Mom, he lived in Germany for a time. He actually was there for 5 years at the Ramstein Air Force Base near Frankfurt, and in the time he travelled around to many different parts of Europe. Plus, he is a Black Belt in Karate, which makes me feel really safe when walking around some shadier parts of the city, especially in the evening, as it has begun to get darker earlier.
AS for the work here, we are trying to really work with the members a lot more and to emphasize the importance of families. We are hoping to start bringing in friends of members so that they will already have a support base at church.
Tell Grandma thanks for the Birthday card she sent me. It is always really great to hear from her. I also received a bunch of cards from members of the branch in New Haven that they wrote to me for a FHE activity. Many of them asked me what I do without the Belgian waffles from the Yale Dining Halls that I used to eat at least once a day. In fact, I have filled that gap in my diet with Romanian delicacies such as Gogosi, which are like large, sugary, stuffed scones, and Fornetti pastry snacks that contain all sorts of cheeses and sauces.
Well, I have to go, but be sure to tell Joe hi for me and to let him know that I think him a loser if it took a large scale natural disaster for him to go visit you. Also, give Belle and Courtney hugs for me.
Love muchly, Elder Walker Frahm
